Domestic violence affects 1 in 4 women, and, on average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. The statistics are alarming and Mary Daniel’s story is unfortunately all too common. After years of silently enduring domestic violence at the hands of her husband, Mary Daniels, along with her two young children, left her abuser and took out a restraining order against him. Unfortunately, that piece of paper wasn’t enough to protect her. On August 3, 2010, her estranged husband waited for her outside of her work and brutally stabbed her to death. After her murder,Mary’s friends and family joined forces to spread awareness and education about the pervasive occurrence of domestic violence. They partnered up with COMTREA to raise funds to provide additional safe housing for women and children escaping violence. Branching off from COMTREA’s existing residential program called a Safe Place, which happens to be the only emergency shelter in Jefferson County, they would call this transitional housing program Mary’s House of Hope at a Safe Place. This program not only provides four housing units in Jefferson County for up to 16 women and their families to retreat to for safety for one to two years, but also prevents survivors and their families from returning to the abuse by offering self-empowerment measures and resources necessary to foster an independent, healthy future for the victims.
Please join us for the 24th Annual Summer Sizzler to support Mary’s cause. All proceeds will go towards completing the $3.5 million dollar project which includes building the four units to house these women and children and granting them the opportunity to rebuild their lives.
